GRAVELLY VALLEY SCHOOL

When Gravelly Valley School District was formed Sept. 11, 1877, it was a new district, not taken from another. Gravelly Valley School was East of the Fordyce place. The community of Hullville and Gravelly Valley School were very close together. The school ran until the Snow Mountain Water & Power company came in to build Scott Dam (which forms Lake Pillsbury). They moved the school to the old post office building in Hullville where it stayed until the school district lapsed in 1918.
The schoolhouse was built in 1878 by Archie McMath, J. M. Daughters, H. L. Walker, Martin Montgomery. It was about ¾ mile up from where the dam is, and on the north side of Eel River about where Big Squaw Valley Creek enters the larger stream
The first school burned and school was held in the Post Office building in Hullville until a new building could be built. The new schoolhouse was on the Simons place. Later this ranch was sold to the W. P. Fuller family. The site of the school is now covered by Lake Pillsbury.

This sketch was made by Miss E. M. Voris, teacher.
